Official Gmail app finally comes to iOS... sorta
There are a few improvements and additions in the way of Gmail today, with an entirely new Gmail interface available as well as a Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Google has been working on Gmail's new design since July, when it released a small preview. The new interface is finally completed, and it will be rolling out to users of the next few days.
Some new features in the Gmail redesign include streamlined conversations, which has been changed to allow users to see profile pictures for contacts in order to sift through conversations more easily; new HD themes, which offer high resolution themes provided by iStockphoto and have even updated some old ones; elastic density, which changes the elements on the screen based on the type of display you're using (for instance, switching between a desktop and a tablet); smarter navigation, where the navigation panel on the left contains customizable options for labels and contacts, and a better search experience, which allows the user to easily filter a search to find exactly what they're looking for.
"We're excited to finally share Gmail's new look with you," said The Official Google Blog. "We'll be bringing these changes to everyone soon, but if you'd like to make the switch right away, we're rolling out a 'Switch to new look link' in the bottom-right of Gmail over the next few days."
In addition to an all-new Gmail interface, Apple iOS users will now receive the first-ever Gmail app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The app offers speedy push notifications and sounds for new message alerts, a search option for finding what you need, autocomplete email addresses from your contacts list, an upload feature for photo attachments, a split view option for iPad that allows you to read email and sift through your inbox simultaneously, a Priority Inbox, threaded conversations, a pull-down feature for refreshing your inbox, a swipe-right feature to view labels without leaving your inbox, and options for labeling, starring and archiving mail.
